She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Her father recognized her talent for music at a young age and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Kuhse began her musical training at the age of six, studying piano and violin. She showed exceptional talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. She continued her studies at the Berlin Conservatory, where she studied under the tutelage of renowned musicians such as Wilhelm Kempff and Yehudi Menuhin. Kuhse's talent was not limited to just one instrument. She was also an accomplished singer and began studying voice at the age of 16. Her voice was described as "pure and angelic," and she quickly gained recognition as a soprano. In 1951, Kuhse made her debut as a soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21. Her performance was met with critical acclaim, and she was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the next few years, Kuhse continued to perform with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic.
