Artist Info
Role:EnsembleEnsemble Clematis is a classical music group that specializes in the performance of early music. The ensemble was founded in 2005 by the Belgian harpsichordist and conductor, Stéphanie de Failly. The group is based in Switzerland and is made up of a core group of musicians who perform on a variety of period instruments. Stéphanie de Failly was born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1979. She began her musical studies at the age of six, learning to play the piano and the harpsichord. She went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where she earned a degree in harpsichord performance. She also studied with renowned harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt in Amsterdam. After completing her studies, de Failly began performing as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe. She quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile performer, and was soon invited to perform with some of the leading early music ensembles in Europe. In 2005, de Failly founded Ensemble Clematis with the goal of exploring the rich and diverse repertoire of early music. The group takes its name from the clematis flower, which is known for its ability to climb and adapt to different environments. This name reflects the ensemble's commitment to exploring the many different styles and genres of early music. Since its founding, Ensemble Clematis has become one of the leading early music ensembles in Europe. The group has performed at some of the most prestigious music festivals in the world, including the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Festival de Saintes, and the Utrecht Early Music Festival. One of the highlights of Ensemble Clematis's career was their performance of Handel's opera, Giulio Cesare, at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence in 2012. The production was directed by the renowned French director, Patrice Chéreau, and was widely praised for its innovative staging and powerful performances. Ensemble Clematis has also received numerous awards and accolades for their recordings. In 2010, the group's recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations was named "Recording of the Year" by the French magazine, Diapason. The group has also received critical acclaim for their recordings of music by Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Philipp Telemann, and Jean-Philippe Rameau. One of the unique aspects of Ensemble Clematis's performances is their use of period instruments. The group performs on a variety of instruments that were popular during the Baroque and Renaissance periods, including the harpsichord, the viola da gamba, and the lute. This allows the group to recreate the sound and style of early music in a way that is authentic and true to the original compositions. Ensemble Clematis is also known for their commitment to education and outreach. The group regularly performs in schools and community centers, and has developed a number of educational programs that introduce young people to the world of early music. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ensemble Clematis is also involved in research and scholarship. The group works closely with musicologists and historians to uncover new information about the music of the Baroque and Renaissance periods, and to develop new approaches to performing this music. Overall, Ensemble Clematis is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is dedicated to exploring the rich and diverse world of early music.More....
