Born on May 5, 1945, in Moscow, Lazarev showed an early interest in music and began studying piano at the age of five. He later went on to study conducting at the Moscow Conservatory, where he was mentored by the legendary conductor Yevgeny Svetlanov. Lazarev's career as a conductor began in 1971 when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
