Paul Marleyn is a renowned classical guitarist and professor of music at the University of Ottawa. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1968, Marleyn began playing the guitar at the age of 10. He was initially self-taught, but later received formal training from renowned guitarists such as Norbert Kraft, Eli Kassner, and Pepe Romero. Marleyn’s talent and dedication to the guitar quickly became apparent, and he began to receive recognition for his performances. In 1987, he won first prize in the Canadian Music Competition, and in 1988, he won the Grand Prix at the Concours de Guitare de Montréal. These early successes set the stage for a career that would see Marleyn become one of the most respected classical guitarists of his generation. Throughout his career, Marleyn has performed extensively throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. He has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal. He has also performed in many prestigious venues, such as Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Wigmore Hall in London. Marleyn’s repertoire is diverse, ranging from Baroque and Classical music to contemporary works. He has recorded several albums, including “The Romantic Guitar” and “The Spanish Guitar,” which showcase his virtuosity and musical sensitivity. His performances are characterized by a deep understanding of the music he plays, as well as a technical mastery of the guitar. In addition to his performing career, Marleyn is also a respected educator. He has taught at the University of Ottawa since 1995, where he is currently a full professor and the director of the guitar program. He has also taught at the Banff Centre for the Arts and the Domaine Forget International Music and Dance Academy. Marleyn’s contributions to the world of classical guitar have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1993, he was awarded the prestigious Canada Council for the Arts’ Career Development Grant, which allowed him to further his studies with Pepe Romero in California. In 1995, he was awarded the Prix Opus for Best Concert of the Year in the category of “Musique actuelle, électroacoustique, musique nouvelle” for his performance of “The Spanish Guitar” at the Festival International de Lanaudière. Marleyn’s dedication to the guitar and his commitment to excellence have made him a beloved figure in the world of classical music. His performances are a testament to the power of music to move and inspire, and his contributions to the education of future generations of musicians ensure that his legacy will endure for years to come.
