Vox Luminis is a Belgian early music ensemble that specializes in the performance of vocal music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The group was founded in 2004 by Lionel Meunier, a bass singer and conductor who had previously worked with other early music ensembles such as Collegium Vocale Gent and La Petite Bande. Meunier's vision for Vox Luminis was to create a group that would focus on the performance of lesser-known works from the early music repertoire, as well as on the exploration of the historical context and performance practices of the music. The ensemble's name, which means "voice of light" in Latin, reflects this mission, as well as the group's commitment to clarity and transparency in their performances. In the early years of the ensemble, Vox Luminis performed primarily in Belgium and other parts of Europe, building a reputation for their high-quality performances and innovative programming. The group's first recording, released in 2007, was a collection of motets by the 16th-century composer Philippe de Monte, which received critical acclaim and helped to establish Vox Luminis as a leading early music ensemble. Over the years, Vox Luminis has continued to expand their repertoire and their reach, performing at major festivals and concert halls around the world. Some of the highlights of the group's career include performances at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Utrecht Early Music Festival, and the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, as well as concerts at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Lincoln Center in New York. In addition to their live performances, Vox Luminis has also released a number of highly acclaimed recordings, including a series of albums devoted to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Their 2012 recording of Bach's motets was particularly well-received, earning the group a number of awards and nominations, including a Diapason d'Or and a Gramophone Award. Other notable recordings by Vox Luminis include their 2014 album of music by Heinrich Schütz, which won the International Classical Music Award for best early music recording, and their 2016 recording of music by the 17th-century composer Johann Hermann Schein, which was named one of the best classical albums of the year by The New York Times. Throughout their career, Vox Luminis has been recognized for their exceptional musicianship and their commitment to historical accuracy and authenticity in their performances. In addition to their numerous recordings and performances, the group has also been the recipient of a number of awards and honors, including the prestigious Gramophone Award for best early music recording in 2012. Today, Vox Luminis continues to be one of the most respected and innovative early music ensembles in the world, with a reputation for excellence that is unmatched in the field. With their commitment to historical accuracy, their dedication to lesser-known works from the early music repertoire, and their exceptional musicianship, Vox Luminis is sure to remain a leading force in the world of classical music for many years to come.
