Born on October 16, 1971, in Bilbao, Spain, Polo showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. He studied at the Conservatorio Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga in Bilbao and later at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. Polo's talent was quickly recognized, and he began to receive invitations to perform at various concerts and festivals. In 1993, he won the First Prize at the National Youth Competition of Spain, which marked the beginning of his professional career. He went on to win several other awards, including the First Prize at the International Cello Competition in Llanes, Spain, in 1994, and the First Prize at the International Cello Competition in Vittorio Veneto, Italy, in 1995. Polo's career took off in the late 1990s when he began to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras. He has collaborated with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. He has also worked with some of the most renowned conductors, including Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, and Daniel Barenboim. One of the highlights of Polo's career was his performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2001. The performance was highly acclaimed, and Polo was praised for his "rich, warm tone and impeccable technique." He has also performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. In addition to his work as a soloist, Polo is also a dedicated chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Tokyo String Quartet, the Emerson String Quartet, and the Guarneri Quartet.
