Asier Polo is a renowned Spanish cellist who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born on October 16, 1971, in Bilbao, Spain, Polo showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. He studied at the Conservatorio Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga in Bilbao and later at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. Polo's talent was quickly recognized, and he began to receive invitations to perform at various concerts and festivals. In 1993, he won the First Prize at the National Youth Competition of Spain, which marked the beginning of his professional career. He went on to win several other awards, including the First Prize at the International Cello Competition in Llanes, Spain, in 1994, and the First Prize at the International Cello Competition in Vittorio Veneto, Italy, in 1995. Polo's career took off in the late 1990s when he began to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras. He has collaborated with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. He has also worked with some of the most renowned conductors, including Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, and Daniel Barenboim. One of the highlights of Polo's career was his performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2001. The performance was highly acclaimed, and Polo was praised for his "rich, warm tone and impeccable technique." He has also performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. In addition to his work as a soloist, Polo is also a dedicated chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Tokyo String Quartet, the Emerson String Quartet, and the Guarneri Quartet. He is a founding member of the Trio Arriaga, which has been praised for its "exquisite musicianship and perfect ensemble playing." Polo is also a passionate advocate for contemporary music. He has premiered works by some of the most important contemporary composers, including Krzysztof Penderecki, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Peter Eötvös. He has also recorded several albums of contemporary music, including a CD of works by the Spanish composer Luis de Pablo. Polo's recordings have received critical acclaim and have won several awards. His recording of the Bach Cello Suites was praised for its "clarity, precision, and emotional depth," and his recording of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi was awarded the Diapason d'Or. He has also recorded several albums for the Naxos label, including a CD of works by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. Polo is known for his warm, rich tone and his impeccable technique. He plays on a cello made by the Italian luthier Matteo Goffriller in 1700, which he acquired in 2001. He has said that the cello has "a very special sound, with a lot of character and personality." In addition to his work as a performer, Polo is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Musikene Conservatory in San Sebastián, Spain, and at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid.
