He was the youngest of six children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a Baptist minister who played the guitar and sang, and his mother was a pianist and singer. Stewart's love for music was evident from a young age, and he began singing in church choirs and school productions. Stewart attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied music and voice. He also sang in the university's choir and performed in several operas. After graduating, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in opera. Stewart made his professional debut in 1959 with the New York City Opera, where he sang the role of Ramfis in Verdi's Aida. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence. In 1960, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera as the King in Verdi's Aida. Over the course of his career, Stewart performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. He was particularly renowned for his performances in Wagnerian roles, such as Wotan in The Ring Cycle and the Dutchman in The Flying Dutchman. Stewart also had a successful career as a concert singer, performing with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. He was known for his interpretations of works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart, as well as modern composers such as Stravinsky and Britten. Throughout his career, Stewart received many awards and honors. In 1963, he won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, which launched his career. He was also a recipient of the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording for his performance in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Stewart was also a dedicated teacher and mentor to young singers. He taught at the University of Michigan and the University of Maryland, and he was a frequent guest lecturer and masterclass teacher at universities and conservatories around the world. Stewart retired from performing in 1999, but he continued to be active in the music world as a judge for vocal competitions and as a mentor to young singers.
