He was the son of a Danish father and a Norwegian mother. Hansen grew up in a musical family, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion for music from a young age. Hansen began his musical training at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned Danish pianist and composer Herman D. Koppel. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with the legendary pianist and teacher Rosina Lhévinne. Hansen's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. He won his first major competition, the Carl Nielsen Piano Competition, at the age of 18, and went on to win several other prestigious competitions throughout his career. Hansen's career as a concert pianist took off in the 1970s, and he quickly became known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to interpret a wide range of musical styles. He performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and was particularly renowned for his performances of the works of Danish composers such as Carl Nielsen and Niels Gade. One of Hansen's most notable performances was his 1976 debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City, where he received critical acclaim for his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. He went on to perform at many other major concert halls around the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Hansen was also a prolific recording artist, and he released numerous albums throughout his career. His recordings of the works of Carl Nielsen and Niels Gade were particularly well-received, and he was awarded several prestigious awards for his recordings, including the Danish Music Award and the Edison Award. In addition to his career as a performer, Hansen was also a respected teacher and mentor to many young pianists. He taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Music for many years, and also served as a guest lecturer and masterclass instructor at several other institutions around the world. Hansen's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Order of the Dannebrog, one of Denmark's highest honors, in 1985, and was also awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize in 1995. Hansen continued to perform and record throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, but his career was cut short by his untimely death in 2003 at the age of 57.
