Céline Scheen is a Belgian soprano who has established herself as one of the leading interpreters of Baroque and Classical music. Born in Liège, Belgium in 1976, Scheen grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. She studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and later at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. Scheen's career began to take off in the early 2000s, when she began performing with some of the leading Baroque ensembles in Europe, including Les Arts Florissants, La Petite Bande, and Collegium Vocale Gent. She quickly gained a reputation for her clear, agile voice and her ability to convey the emotional depth of the music she sang. One of Scheen's early breakthrough performances came in 2003, when she sang the role of Euridice in a production of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. Her performance was widely praised for its beauty and sensitivity, and it helped to establish her as a rising star in the world of Baroque opera. In the years that followed, Scheen continued to perform with some of the most prestigious ensembles in Europe, including the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. She also began to make a name for herself as a soloist, performing in recitals and concerts throughout Europe and North America. One of Scheen's most notable performances came in 2010, when she sang the role of Cleopatra in a production of Handel's Giulio Cesare at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie. Her performance was widely praised for its virtuosity and dramatic intensity, and it helped to cement her reputation as one of the leading interpreters of Baroque opera. In addition to her work in Baroque and Classical music, Scheen has also performed in contemporary operas and oratorios. She has worked with composers such as Philippe Boesmans and Kaija Saariaho, and has premiered several new works written specifically for her voice. Scheen's talent and hard work have been recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 2005, she was awarded the Prix Caecilia, one of the most prestigious music awards in Belgium, for her recording of Bach's St. John Passion with the ensemble La Petite Bande. She has also been awarded the Prix de la Critique in France and the Diapason d'Or in Belgium for her recordings. Despite her success, Scheen remains committed to her craft and continues to push herself to new heights as a performer.
