FranceBirth:1567Death:after 1617Period:RenaissanceGenre:ChamberJean-Baptiste Besard was a French composer and lutenist who lived during the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He was born in the town of Besançon, France, in 1567, and little is known about his early life and musical training. Besard's career as a musician began in the late 16th century, when he moved to Germany and became a lutenist in the court of the Duke of Württemberg. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled performer and composer, and his music was widely admired throughout Europe. Besard's most famous work is his collection of lute music, entitled "Thesaurus Harmonicus." This collection, which was published in 1603, contains over 400 pieces for the lute, including dances, fantasias, and variations on popular tunes of the day. The music in "Thesaurus Harmonicus" is notable for its technical complexity and its use of intricate counterpoint and ornamentation. Besard's other works include a collection of vocal music entitled "Airs de Cour," which was published in 1604. This collection contains songs for solo voice and lute, as well as duets and trios. The music in "Airs de Cour" is characterized by its elegant melodies and its use of rich harmonies and expressive text settings. Besard's music was highly influential in the development of the lute as a solo instrument, and his compositions were widely performed and admired throughout the 17th century. His legacy as a composer and performer continues to be celebrated today, and his music remains an important part of the classical music repertoire.More....
