He began studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen at the age of 16. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers in Denmark and quickly established himself as one of the most promising young musicians in the country. In 1975, Ulrik graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Music with a degree in piano performance. He immediately began performing in concerts and recitals throughout Denmark and quickly gained a reputation as a talented and dynamic performer. He was known for his technical skill, his emotional depth, and his ability to connect with audiences. In 1978, Ulrik won the prestigious Carl Nielsen Piano Competition, which was held in Copenhagen. The competition was open to pianists from all over the world, and Ulrik's victory was a major achievement. It brought him international recognition and helped to establish him as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Over the next few years, Ulrik continued to perform in concerts and recitals throughout Europe and the United States. He was invited to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He also performed at some of the world's most prestigious music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. In 1985, Ulrik released his first solo album, which was titled "Ulrik Cold Plays Chopin."
