The Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Française (ONRF) is a classical music ensemble based in Paris, France. It was founded in 1934 by the French government as part of the Radiodiffusion Française, the national radio broadcasting organization. The ONRF was created to provide high-quality orchestral music to the French public through radio broadcasts. The ONRF's first conductor was Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht, a Belgian-born conductor and composer who had previously conducted the Orchestre des Concerts Colonne. Inghelbrecht led the ONRF until 1944, when he was replaced by Manuel Rosenthal, a French conductor and composer who had previously worked with Maurice Ravel. Under Rosenthal's leadership, the ONRF became known for its performances of French music, particularly the works of Ravel and Debussy. The orchestra also began to tour internationally, performing in countries such as the United States, Japan, and Australia. In 1967, the ONRF merged with another French orchestra, the Orchestre National de l'ORTF, to form the Orchestre National de France (ONF). The ONF continued to perform under the direction of Rosenthal until 1975, when he was succeeded by Lorin Maazel, an American conductor who had previously worked with the Cleveland Orchestra. During Maazel's tenure, the ONF continued to tour internationally and perform at major music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the BBC Proms. The orchestra also recorded extensively, releasing recordings of works by composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler. In 1989, the ONF was renamed the Orchestre National de France (ONF), and it continues to perform under that name today. The orchestra has been led by a number of prominent conductors, including Kurt Masur, Daniele Gatti, and Emmanuel Krivine. Over the years, the ONF has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 1991, the orchestra won a Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance for its recording of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique. The ONF has also been awarded the Grand Prix du Disque, the Diapason d'Or, and the Victoires de la Musique, among other honors. Today, the ONF is one of the leading orchestras in France and is known for its performances of both classical and contemporary music. The orchestra performs regularly at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris and also tours internationally. Its current music director is Cristian Măcelaru, a Romanian-American conductor who has previously worked with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne.
