The Ljubljana Radio Symphony Orchestra (LRSO) is a classical music ensemble based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The orchestra was founded in 1934 as the Radio Ljubljana Symphony Orchestra, and it has since become one of the most prominent orchestras in Slovenia and the wider region. The LRSO has had a number of notable conductors over the years, including Anton Nanut, Marko Munih, and Uroš Lajovic. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, such as pianist Dubravka Tomšič, violinist Igor Ozim, and cellist Mischa Maisky. One of the highlights of the LRSO's history was its performance at the 1955 International Festival of Contemporary Music in Venice, where it premiered works by Slovenian composers such as Marijan Lipovšek and Lucijan Marija Škerjanc. The orchestra has also performed at many other prestigious festivals and venues, including the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. In addition to its live performances, the LRSO has also recorded extensively, with over 100 albums to its name. Some of its most notable recordings include a complete cycle of Beethoven's symphonies, as well as works by Slovenian composers such as Marjan Kozina and Alojz Srebotnjak. Over the years, the LRSO has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2001, the orchestra was awarded the Prešeren Award, Slovenia's highest cultural honor, for its contributions to Slovenian music. The LRSO has also been recognized internationally, receiving the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or for its recordings. Today, the LRSO continues to be a vital part of Slovenia's cultural landscape, performing regularly at home and abroad.
