The orchestra was founded in 1934 as the Radio Ljubljana Symphony Orchestra, and it has since become one of the most prominent orchestras in Slovenia and the wider region. The LRSO has had a number of notable conductors over the years, including Anton Nanut, Marko Munih, and Uroš Lajovic. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, such as pianist Dubravka Tomšič, violinist Igor Ozim, and cellist Mischa Maisky. One of the highlights of the LRSO's history was its performance at the 1955 International Festival of Contemporary Music in Venice, where it premiered works by Slovenian composers such as Marijan Lipovšek and Lucijan Marija Škerjanc. The orchestra has also performed at many other prestigious festivals and venues, including the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London.
