He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Kurz showed a natural talent for playing the piano, and his parents encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Kurz began his formal music education at the Stuttgart Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, Carl Seemann. He later continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich, where he was mentored by the legendary pianist, Wilhelm Kempff. Kurz's talent as a pianist was quickly recognized, and he began to gain recognition as a rising star in the classical music world. In 1959, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland, which helped to launch his career as a soloist. Over the next few years, Kurz performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, earning critical acclaim for his virtuosic performances and sensitive interpretations of classical music. He was particularly known for his performances of the works of Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms, and was praised for his ability to bring out the emotional depth and complexity of these composers' music. In 1965, Kurz made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5. The performance was a huge success, and Kurz was invited to perform with the orchestra again the following year. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. Throughout his career, Kurz was also a dedicated teacher, and he held teaching positions at several prestigious music schools, including the Hochschule für Musik in Munich and the Juilliard School in New York. He was known for his patient and supportive teaching style, and many of his students went on to have successful careers as pianists. In addition to his performances and teaching, Kurz was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded many of the major works of the classical piano repertoire. His recordings were widely praised for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity, and many of them are still considered to be definitive interpretations of these works. Kurz's career was marked by many highlights and achievements, including numerous awards and honors. In 1972, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, one of the country's highest honors. He was also awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Order of Merit of Baden-Württemberg. Despite his many accomplishments, Kurz remained humble and dedicated to his craft throughout his life. He continued to perform and teach until his death in 1996, at the age of 60.
