Role:ConductorGenre:OperaCharles Rosekrans was born on May 22, 1942, in New York City. He grew up in a family that was passionate about music, and he began playing the piano at a young age. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Rosekrans attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied piano and composition. He also studied conducting with Leonard Bernstein and Pierre Boulez. After graduating from Juilliard, Rosekrans began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras and opera companies. One of Rosekrans' early successes was his work with the New York City Opera. He served as the company's assistant conductor from 1968 to 1970 and then as its principal conductor from 1970 to 1976. During his tenure, he conducted numerous productions, including the world premiere of Philip Glass's "Einstein on the Beach." In 1976, Rosekrans was appointed the music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. He held this position for 14 years, during which time he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. He also worked to expand the orchestra's outreach programs, bringing classical music to new audiences throughout the state. In addition to his work with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Rosekrans was also a frequent guest conductor with other orchestras around the world. He conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Philharmonic, among others. One of Rosekrans' most notable achievements was his work with the New York Pops. He served as the orchestra's music director and conductor from 1992 to 2002, during which time he led the orchestra in numerous performances at Carnegie Hall and other venues. He also worked to expand the orchestra's repertoire, incorporating popular music and Broadway show tunes into its programs. Rosekrans received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1995, he was awarded the New Jersey Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. He was also a recipient of the ASCAP Victor Herbert Award and the National Endowment for the Arts Conductors Fellowship. In addition to his work as a conductor, Rosekrans was also a composer. He wrote numerous works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, and solo instruments. His compositions have been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. Rosekrans retired from conducting in 2002, but he continued to be active in the music world. He served as a guest lecturer and conductor at various universities and music schools, and he remained involved in the New York Pops as its conductor laureate. Charles Rosekrans passed away on December 27, 2016, at the age of 74. He was remembered as a passionate and dedicated musician who had a profound impact on the classical music world.
