Born on August 22, 1956, in San Francisco, California, Macomber grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Macomber started playing the violin at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Macomber's musical education began at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Isadore Tinkleman. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree.
