Born in the Netherlands in 1960, Henstra showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where he received his degree in harpsichord performance. Henstra's career as a musician began in the early 1980s when he joined the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, led by the famous conductor Ton Koopman. He quickly established himself as a talented harpsichordist and became an integral part of the orchestra. During his time with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Henstra performed in numerous concerts and recordings, including the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach. In addition to his work with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Henstra has also performed with other renowned ensembles, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many prominent musicians, including the violinist Rachel Podger and the cellist Pieter Wispelwey. One of the highlights of Henstra's career was his performance at the 1999 Proms in London, where he played the harpsichord in Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5.
