Li-Wei Qin is a renowned cellist and classical music artist who has captivated audiences around the world with his virtuosic performances and deep musicality. Born in Shanghai, China in 1976, Qin began playing the cello at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and later at the Yehudi Menuhin School in England, where he was mentored by the legendary cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich. Qin's early career was marked by a series of impressive accomplishments and accolades. In 1993, he won first prize at the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians, which launched him onto the international stage. He went on to win numerous other awards and competitions, including the First Prize and Gold Medal at the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2001, cementing his reputation as one of the world's leading cellists. Over the years, Qin has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time, including pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Maxim Vengerov, and conductor Valery Gergiev. One of Qin's most memorable performances was his debut at the BBC Proms in 2000, where he played the Elgar Cello Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Slatkin. The performance was widely praised for its emotional depth and technical brilliance, and cemented Qin's reputation as one of the most exciting young cellists of his generation. In addition to his work as a performer, Qin is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, and is currently a professor of cello at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He is known for his passionate and insightful approach to teaching, and has helped to inspire a new generation of young cellists. Throughout his career, Qin has remained committed to expanding the repertoire for the cello and promoting new works by contemporary composers. He has premiered numerous new pieces, including works by Tan Dun, Chen Yi, and Qigang Chen, and has recorded several albums of contemporary music alongside his more traditional repertoire. In recognition of his many achievements, Qin has been honored with numerous awards and accolades. In 2002, he was named a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London, and in 2011 he was awarded the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians. He has also been recognized by the Chinese government for his contributions to music and culture, and was awarded the prestigious Friendship Award in 2016. Despite his many accomplishments, Qin remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and teach around the world, and is widely regarded as one of the most talented and inspiring cellists of his generation.
