The Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, also known as the Conservatoire Concert Society Orchestra, is a classical music ensemble based in Paris, France. Founded in 1828, the orchestra has a rich history of performing and promoting classical music in France and around the world. The orchestra was founded by François-Antoine Habeneck, a French violinist and conductor who was also the director of the Paris Conservatory. Habeneck wanted to create an orchestra that would showcase the talents of the Conservatory's students and faculty, as well as provide a platform for the performance of classical music in Paris. The orchestra's first concert was held on March 9, 1828, at the Salle des Concerts du Conservatoire, and featured works by Beethoven, Haydn, and Mozart. Over the years, the orchestra has had many notable members, including the composer Hector Berlioz, who served as a conductor from 1830 to 1832. Other notable conductors have included Jules Pasdeloup, who led the orchestra from 1861 to 1884, and André Cluytens, who served as principal conductor from 1949 to 1960. The orchestra has also had many notable soloists perform with them over the years, including pianist Franz Liszt, violinist Pablo de Sarasate, and cellist Jacqueline du Pré. In addition, the orchestra has premiered many important works, including Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique and Debussy's La mer. One of the orchestra's most notable performances was its appearance at the 1900 Paris Exposition, where it performed a series of concerts that were attended by thousands of people. The orchestra also performed at the 1937 World's Fair in Paris, where it premiered Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major. In addition to its performances in France, the orchestra has also toured extensively around the world. In 1964, the orchestra made its first tour of the United States, performing in cities such as New York, Boston, and Chicago. The orchestra has also toured in Asia, South America, and Europe. Over the years, the orchestra has received many awards and accolades for its performances. In 2001, the orchestra was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé. The orchestra has also been awarded the Victoires de la Musique Classique, France's most prestigious classical music award, several times. Today, the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire continues to be one of the most important classical music ensembles in France.
