The St. Petersburg New Philharmonic is made up of some of the most talented musicians in Russia, many of whom have studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. The ensemble has a reputation for its high level of musicianship and its ability to perform a wide range of classical music repertoire. One of the highlights of the St. Petersburg New Philharmonic's early years was its performance of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1992. The performance was highly acclaimed and helped to establish the ensemble's reputation as one of the leading classical music ensembles in Russia. Over the years, the St. Petersburg New Philharmonic has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned soloists, including pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Maxim Vengerov, and cellist Mischa Maisky. In addition to its performances, the St. Petersburg New Philharmonic has also received numerous awards and accolades for its recordings. The ensemble's recording of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7, conducted by Nikolai Alexeev, won the Grand Prix du Disque in 1993. The ensemble has also received critical acclaim for its recordings of works by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Prokofiev. Despite its success, the St. Petersburg New Philharmonic has faced some challenges over the years. In 2007, the ensemble was forced to cancel a tour of the United States due to visa issues. The following year, the ensemble faced financial difficulties and was forced to cancel several concerts. Despite these challenges, the St. Petersburg New Philharmonic has continued to thrive and has remained one of the leading classical music ensembles in Russia.
