The NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Hannover, Germany. It was founded in 1950 as the Hannover Radio Symphony Orchestra, and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Europe. The orchestra was originally established as part of the North German Radio (NDR) broadcasting network, which was created after World War II to provide radio programming to the northern regions of Germany. The Hannover Radio Symphony Orchestra was one of several orchestras created by the NDR, and was intended to provide high-quality classical music programming to listeners in the Hannover area. Over the years, the orchestra has undergone several name changes and has expanded its repertoire to include a wide range of classical and contemporary music. In 1959, it was renamed the NDR Symphony Orchestra, and in 2002 it became the NDR Radiophilharmonie. The orchestra has had many notable conductors over the years, including Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, Günter Wand, and John Eliot Gardiner. Its current chief conductor is Andrew Manze, who has been with the orchestra since 2014. The NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals throughout Europe, including the Salzburg Festival, the BBC Proms, and the Berlin Philharmonic. It has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including Anne-Sophie Mutter, Lang Lang, and Yo-Yo Ma. One of the orchestra's most notable performances was its 2009 concert at the Berlin Philharmonic, which was conducted by Andrew Manze and featured works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann. The concert was widely praised for its energy and precision, and helped to cement the orchestra's reputation as one of the finest in Europe. The NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra has also won many awards and accolades over the years. In 2014, it was named "Orchestra of the Year" by the German music magazine Opernwelt, and in 2015 it won the Echo Klassik award for its recording of works by the composer Hans Werner Henze. Despite its many achievements, the NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra remains committed to its mission of bringing high-quality classical music to audiences throughout northern Germany and beyond. With its talented musicians, world-class conductors, and diverse repertoire, it is sure to continue delighting audiences for many years to come.
