From a young age, Gaunt showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Gaunt's musical education began at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Dame Myra Hess. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York, where he honed his skills and developed his unique style of playing. Throughout his career, Gaunt performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. He was known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. One of Gaunt's most notable performances was his rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the "Emperor" concerto. He performed this piece with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in 1985, to critical acclaim. The performance was described as "mesmerizing" and "spellbinding," and cemented Gaunt's reputation as one of the world's leading classical pianists. In addition to his performances, Gaunt was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded over 30 albums throughout his career, including solo piano works, chamber music, and concertos. His recordings were highly regarded by critics and audiences alike, and he received numerous awards and accolades for his work. One of Gaunt's most significant achievements was his appointment as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1998. This prestigious honor was awarded to him in recognition of his services to music and his contribution to the cultural life of the United Kingdom. Despite his success, Gaunt remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He was known for his tireless work ethic and his commitment to excellence. He continued to perform and record well into his later years, and his legacy as one of the greatest classical pianists of all time lives on. Sadly, William Gaunt passed away on 15th March 2015, at the age of 64.
