He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known violinist. Lev Markiz began playing the violin at a young age and showed exceptional talent. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where he was taught by some of the most prominent musicians of the time. Markiz's career as a conductor began in the 1950s when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and innovative conductor, and his performances were highly acclaimed. In 1968, he was invited to conduct the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, and he moved to the Netherlands to take up the position of principal conductor. Markiz's tenure with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was highly successful, and he conducted the orchestra in many of the world's leading concert halls. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky. Markiz was also a champion of contemporary music, and he conducted many premieres of works by leading composers of the time. Markiz's career as a conductor spanned several decades, and he conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Markiz continued to perform and conduct well into his 80s, and he remained an active and influential figure in the world of classical music until his death on December 11, 2014, at the age of 92.
