Jonathan Heyward is a rising star in the world of classical music. Born in 1992 in Charleston, South Carolina, Heyward showed an early interest in music, playing the piano and trumpet from a young age. He attended the Charleston County School of the Arts, where he studied trumpet and conducting. Heyward went on to study at the Boston Conservatory, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. During his time at the conservatory, he also studied conducting with Bruce Hangen and David Hoose. Heyward continued his studies at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a Master of Music degree in conducting. Heyward's talent as a conductor was quickly recognized, and he was appointed as the Assistant Conductor of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, England in 2015. He worked closely with the orchestra's Music Director, Sir Mark Elder, and conducted several concerts with the orchestra. Heyward also served as the Assistant Conductor of the Oregon Symphony from 2016 to 2018. In 2016, Heyward was named the winner of the Besançon International Competition for Young Conductors in France. This prestigious competition has launched the careers of many successful conductors, including Seiji Ozawa and Gustavo Dudamel. Heyward's victory at the competition led to several high-profile engagements, including a debut with the London Symphony Orchestra. Heyward has also conducted many other major orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He has worked with many renowned soloists, including Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, and Lang Lang. In addition to his work as a conductor, Heyward is also a composer.
