Born in 1992 in Charleston, South Carolina, Heyward showed an early interest in music, playing the piano and trumpet from a young age. He attended the Charleston County School of the Arts, where he studied trumpet and conducting. Heyward went on to study at the Boston Conservatory, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. During his time at the conservatory, he also studied conducting with Bruce Hangen and David Hoose. Heyward continued his studies at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a Master of Music degree in conducting. Heyward's talent as a conductor was quickly recognized, and he was appointed as the Assistant Conductor of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, England in 2015.
