Born in Macon, Georgia in 1988, Cox grew up in a musical family and began playing the violin at a young age. He later switched to the viola and studied at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music. After completing his studies, Cox began his career as a conductor, working with orchestras and opera companies across the United States and Europe. He quickly gained a reputation for his energetic and expressive performances, and was praised for his ability to connect with audiences and musicians alike. One of Cox's early breakthroughs came in 2013, when he was named the assistant conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra. In this role, he worked closely with the orchestra's music director, Osmo Vänskä, and conducted a number of concerts and performances.
