She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Yeend began singing at a young age and was trained in both piano and voice. She attended the University of Washington, where she studied music and voice. Yeend's career as a classical music artist began in the 1940s. She made her debut with the San Francisco Opera in 1941, singing the role of Micaela in Bizet's Carmen. She quickly gained recognition for her powerful voice and her ability to convey emotion through her singing. Yeend went on to perform with many of the world's leading opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera, and the Royal Opera House in London. One of Yeend's most notable performances was her portrayal of Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème. She first performed the role in 1942 with the San Francisco Opera and went on to perform it many times throughout her career. Yeend's interpretation of the role was praised for its emotional depth and sensitivity. In addition to her work in opera, Yeend was also a successful concert artist. She performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Yeend was particularly known for her performances of Mozart's concert arias and lieder. Throughout her career, Yeend received many awards and honors. In 1944, she was awarded the Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air, which led to her debut with the Metropolitan Opera later that year. She was also awarded the National Music Council Award in 1950 and the Handel Medallion from the City of New York in 1971. Yeend retired from performing in 1966, but continued to teach voice at the University of Washington until her death in 2008.
