Born on April 5, 1946, in Genoa, Italy, Serra grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Serra showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. Serra's love for music continued to grow, and she began studying singing at the age of 14. She received her formal training at the Conservatorio di Musica Niccolò Paganini in Genoa, where she studied under the guidance of Ettore Campogalliani. Serra's talent was evident from the start, and she quickly gained recognition for her exceptional vocal abilities. In 1969, Serra made her professional debut at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan, where she performed the role of Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto. Her performance was well-received, and it marked the beginning of a successful career in opera. Serra went on to perform in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. One of Serra's most notable performances was her portrayal of the Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute. Serra's rendition of the famous aria "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" (Hell's vengeance boils in my heart) is considered one of the most challenging pieces in the soprano repertoire. Serra's performance of the aria was nothing short of spectacular, and it earned her critical acclaim and international recognition. Serra's talent and hard work have earned her numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1972, she won the prestigious Viotti d'Oro award for her performance in Rossini's La Cenerentola. She went on to win the same award again in 1975 for her performance in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. In 1982, Serra was awarded the title of "Commendatore" by the Italian government for her contributions to the arts. Serra's career has been marked by many highlights, including her performances in some of the most iconic operas of all time. Despite her many accomplishments, Serra has faced her fair share of challenges throughout her career. In 1991, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which forced her to take a break from performing. However, Serra's determination and resilience allowed her to overcome the illness, and she returned to the stage stronger than ever. Today, Serra continues to perform and inspire audiences around the world. She is also a dedicated teacher, and she has mentored many young singers who have gone on to achieve great success in their own careers.
