Founded in 1989, the orchestra has grown to become one of the most respected and celebrated musical institutions in the United States. The Colorado Symphony Orchestra was born out of a desire to bring world-class classical music to the people of Colorado. In the late 1980s, a group of music lovers and philanthropists came together to form the Colorado Symphony Association, with the goal of creating a professional orchestra that would rival the best in the world. The first concert of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra was held on October 7, 1989, under the direction of conductor Marin Alsop. The program included works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky, and was met with critical acclaim. Over the years, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra has grown in size and stature, attracting some of the world's most talented musicians and conductors. The orchestra has performed with some of the biggest names in classical music, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. One of the highlights of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra's history was its performance at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The orchestra was chosen to represent the United States at the opening ceremonies, and performed a stirring rendition of Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man." In addition to its many performances, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its excellence with numerous awards and accolades. In 2013, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that take risks and push the boundaries of classical music. The Colorado Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its commitment to education and outreach. The orchestra's education programs reach thousands of students each year, and include concerts, workshops, and masterclasses.
