George Georgescu was a Romanian conductor and violinist who was born on March 12, 1887, in Tulcea, Romania. He was the son of a Greek father and a Romanian mother. Georgescu began his musical education at the age of six, studying violin with his father. He later studied at the Bucharest Conservatory, where he was a student of Dimitrie Dinicu and Mihail Jora. In 1912, Georgescu became the concertmaster of the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra. He also began conducting the orchestra, and in 1919, he was appointed its principal conductor. Georgescu quickly gained a reputation as one of Romania's leading conductors, and he was invited to conduct orchestras throughout Europe. In 1928, Georgescu was appointed the principal conductor of the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris. He held this position until 1938, and during his tenure, he conducted many important premieres, including the French premiere of Béla Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra." Georgescu also conducted the Paris premiere of Sergei Prokofiev's "Alexander Nevsky" cantata, with the composer himself at the piano. Georgescu's international career continued to flourish, and he was invited to conduct many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He also conducted at many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. In addition to his conducting career, Georgescu was also a respected violinist. He often performed as a soloist with the orchestras he conducted, and he made several recordings as a violinist. Georgescu's career was interrupted by World War II, and he returned to Romania in 1941. He was appointed the principal conductor of the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra, and he remained in this position until his death in 1964. During this time, he also served as the director of the Bucharest Conservatory. Georgescu was widely recognized for his contributions to classical music. He was awarded the Order of the Star of Romania, the Order of Cultural Merit, and the Order of the Crown. He was also made an honorary member of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic Society. Georgescu's legacy continues to be felt in Romania and throughout the world.
