Vinko Globokar is a Slovenian-French composer, trombonist, and conductor who has made significant contributions to the world of contemporary classical music. Born on July 7, 1934, in Anderny, France, to Slovenian parents, Globokar grew up in Yugoslavia and began playing the trombone at a young age. He studied at the Ljubljana Academy of Music and later at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied composition with Olivier Messiaen and conducting with Pierre Boulez. Globokar's early works were influenced by the avant-garde movement of the 1960s, and he quickly gained a reputation as a composer who pushed the boundaries of traditional classical music. His compositions often incorporate unconventional techniques and sounds, such as extended techniques for brass instruments, vocalizations, and electronic manipulation of sound. One of Globokar's most famous works is his 1969 composition "Discours II," which is scored for solo trombone and a group of instrumentalists who are instructed to improvise based on the trombone's performance. The piece is a commentary on the relationship between the soloist and the ensemble, and it has been performed by many notable trombonists, including Christian Lindberg and Benny Sluchin. Another notable work by Globokar is his 1970 composition "Echanges," which is scored for two orchestras and a soloist who moves between them. The piece explores the idea of communication and exchange between different groups, and it has been performed by many orchestras around the world. Globokar has also composed several operas, including "Un Jour Comme un Autre" (1978) and "Styx" (1986). "Un Jour Comme un Autre" is based on the life of the French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat, and it features a libretto by the composer. "Styx" is a modern retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, and it features a libretto by the German playwright Heiner Müller. In addition to his work as a composer, Globokar is also a highly respected trombonist and conductor. He has performed with many orchestras around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted many contemporary music ensembles, including the Ensemble InterContemporain and the Klangforum Wien. Globokar's contributions to the world of contemporary classical music have been recognized with many awards and honors. In 1985, he was awarded the Prix Italia for his radio opera "Laboratorium." In 1994, he was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. In 2018, he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale. Today, Globokar continues to compose and perform, and his works are regularly performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. His music remains a testament to the power of experimentation and innovation in classical music, and his influence on the contemporary classical music scene is undeniable.
