Ensemble la Fenice is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1996 in Venice, Italy. The ensemble is named after the famous opera house in Venice, La Fenice, which was destroyed by fire in 1996 and rebuilt in 2003. The founding members of the ensemble were Jean Tubéry, Andrea Marcon, and Sergio Azzolini. Jean Tubéry is a French trumpet player and conductor who specializes in early music. He has performed with many of the world's leading early music ensembles, including Hesperion XXI, Les Arts Florissants, and La Petite Bande. Andrea Marcon is an Italian harpsichordist and conductor who has worked with many of the world's leading orchestras and opera companies, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Sergio Azzolini is an Italian bassoonist who has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Ensemble la Fenice specializes in performing music from the Baroque and Classical periods, with a particular focus on the music of Antonio Vivaldi. The ensemble has recorded several albums of Vivaldi's music, including "Concerti per fagotto IV" and "Concerti per violino V". The ensemble has also recorded music by other composers of the Baroque and Classical periods, including Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. One of the highlights of Ensemble la Fenice's career was their performance of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" at the Salzburg Festival in 2000. The performance was conducted by Andrea Marcon and featured the violinist Giuliano Carmignola as soloist. The performance was widely praised by critics and helped to establish Ensemble la Fenice as one of the leading early music ensembles in the world. Ensemble la Fenice has also performed at many other prestigious music festivals and venues around the world, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the BBC Proms, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The ensemble has collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including the violinist Viktoria Mullova, the cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, and the soprano Sandrine Piau. In addition to their performances, Ensemble la Fenice has also received many awards and accolades for their recordings. Their recording of Vivaldi's "Concerti per fagotto IV" was awarded the Diapason d'Or in 2001, and their recording of Vivaldi's "Concerti per violino V" was awarded the Choc du Monde de la Musique in 2003. The ensemble's recording of Bach's "Brandenburg Concertos" was also highly praised by critics and was awarded the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik in 2006. Ensemble la Fenice continues to perform and record music from the Baroque and Classical periods, and their performances are highly regarded by audiences and critics alike. The ensemble's commitment to historical performance practice and their virtuosic playing have made them one of the leading early music ensembles in the world.
