He was born in Venice in 1575, into a family of musicians. His father, Francesco Priuli, was a well-known composer and organist, and his uncle, Giovanni Gabrieli, was a renowned composer and organist at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. Priuli began his musical education at a young age, studying with his father and uncle. He quickly showed a talent for composition, and by the age of 20, he had already published several works. In 1600, he was appointed as the organist at the Church of San Giovanni in Bragora, a position he held for the rest of his life. Priuli's music was heavily influenced by the Venetian school of composers, which included his uncle, Giovanni Gabrieli, as well as Claudio Monteverdi and Andrea Gabrieli. His works were characterized by their use of multiple choirs and instruments, creating a rich and complex sound. One of Priuli's most famous works is his Missa Hodie Christus Natus Est, which was composed in 1612. This mass is notable for its use of multiple choirs and instruments, including cornets, trombones, and violins. The mass was performed at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, and was well-received by both the public and the church authorities. Priuli also composed a number of instrumental works, including canzonas and sonatas. His Sonata a 8 in D Major is particularly noteworthy, as it is one of the earliest examples of a sonata for multiple instruments. The piece features a solo violin, accompanied by two violins, two violas, and a basso continuo. In addition to his work as a composer, Priuli was also a respected music teacher. He taught at the Ospedale della Pietà, a charitable institution in Venice that provided education and musical training to orphaned girls. Many of his students went on to become accomplished musicians in their own right. Priuli died in Venice in 1626, at the age of 51. His legacy as a composer and teacher lives on, and his works continue to be performed and studied by musicians and scholars around the world.More....
