Maria di Rohan is an opera in three acts composed by Gaetano Donizetti. The opera was composed in 1843 and premiered on June 5, 1843, at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna. The libretto was written by Salvadore Cammarano, who also wrote the libretto for Donizetti's famous opera Lucia di Lammermoor. The plot of Maria di Rohan is set in 17th century France and revolves around the love triangle between Maria, the Countess of Rohan, her husband Enrico, and the Duke of Chevreuse. Maria is torn between her love for Enrico and her attraction to the Duke, who is also in love with her. The Duke, however, is also involved in a plot to overthrow the king, and Maria becomes embroiled in the political intrigue. The first act of the opera introduces the characters and sets up the love triangle. Maria is torn between her love for Enrico and her attraction to the Duke. The second act sees the Duke's plot to overthrow the king come to fruition, and Maria becomes involved in the political intrigue. Enrico is also implicated in the plot, and Maria must choose between her love for him and her loyalty to the Duke. The third act sees the resolution of the plot and the tragic end of the love triangle. The music of Maria di Rohan is typical of Donizetti's style, with beautiful melodies and intricate vocal lines. The opera features several notable arias, including Maria's "Ah! non sai qual pena" and the Duke's "Bella sì come un angelo." Maria di Rohan was not as successful as some of Donizetti's other operas, but it is still performed today. The opera is notable for its complex plot and the beautiful music that Donizetti composed for it.
