Persian Folk Songs (7) is a composition by Iranian-American composer Reza Vali. It was composed in 2001 and premiered on March 1, 2002, by the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. The piece consists of seven movements, each based on a different Persian folk song. The first movement, "Khooshe Chin," is a lively and rhythmic dance in 6/8 time. The melody is based on a folk song from the Khorasan region of Iran and features a call-and-response structure between the violin and the cello. The second movement, "Mastoom Mastoom," is a slow and contemplative piece based on a lullaby from the Mazandaran region. The melody is played by the violin and is accompanied by a drone in the cello and viola. The third movement, "Gol-e-Gandom," is a lively and energetic dance in 7/8 time. The melody is based on a folk song from the Gilan region and features a call-and-response structure between the violin and the cello. The fourth movement, "Daramad," is an instrumental introduction based on the Persian classical music form of the same name. It features a slow and contemplative melody played by the violin and is accompanied by a drone in the cello and viola. The fifth movement, "Reng," is a fast and rhythmic dance in 6/8 time. The melody is based on a folk song from the Kermanshah region and features a call-and-response structure between the violin and the cello. The sixth movement, "Lullaby," is a slow and contemplative piece based on a lullaby from the Kurdistan region. The melody is played by the violin and is accompanied by a drone in the cello and viola. The seventh and final movement, "Jaan-e-Maryam," is a lively and energetic dance in 6/8 time. The melody is based on a folk song from the Azerbaijan region and features a call-and-response structure between the violin and the cello. Overall, Persian Folk Songs (7) is a beautiful and evocative work that showcases the rich and diverse musical traditions of Iran. Vali's use of traditional Persian melodies and rhythms, combined with his unique compositional style, creates a truly captivating listening experience.
