He was born in 1956 in New York City, where he grew up and developed a passion for music. Black began playing the double bass at the age of 14 and quickly became enamored with the instrument's deep, rich sound. Black's early musical education was at the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with renowned bassist Homer Mensch. He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with James VanDemark. Black continued his studies at the Yale School of Music, where he earned his Master of Music degree and studied with Gary Karr. After completing his studies, Black began his professional career as a freelance musician in New York City. He quickly established himself as a versatile and talented performer, playing with a variety of orchestras and ensembles. In addition to his work as a classical musician, Black also began to explore contemporary music and avant-garde styles. One of Black's most notable early performances was with the New York Philharmonic, where he played under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. He also performed with the American Symphony Orchestra, the New York City Opera, and the New York City Ballet. In the 1980s, Black began to focus more on contemporary music and experimental styles. He became a founding member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, a group dedicated to performing new and innovative music. With the All-Stars, Black has premiered works by some of the most important contemporary composers of our time, including Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and John Cage. Black has also collaborated with a number of other contemporary music ensembles, including the Kronos Quartet, the Steve Reich Ensemble, and the Philip Glass Ensemble. He has performed at major music festivals around the world, including the Edinburgh Festival, the Berlin Festival, and the Adelaide Festival. In addition to his work as a performer, Black is also a dedicated educator. He has taught at a number of prestigious institutions, including the Manhattan School of Music, the Eastman School of Music, and the Yale School of Music. He is currently a professor of music at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford.
