Viktoria und ihr Husar is an operetta composed by Paul Abraham, with a libretto by Alfred Grünwald and Fritz Löhner-Beda. The operetta premiered on December 23, 1930, at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Austria. The plot of the operetta revolves around the love story between Viktoria, a Hungarian countess, and her lover, Tassilo, a lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian army. The story is set during World War I, and the two lovers are separated by the war. Tassilo is sent to fight in Russia, while Viktoria remains in Hungary. Despite the distance, the two continue to love each other and exchange letters. However, their love is threatened when Tassilo is captured by the Russians and forced to marry a Russian princess. Meanwhile, Viktoria is courted by a wealthy American, who offers to take her away from Hungary. However, Viktoria remains loyal to Tassilo and rejects the American's advances. In the end, Tassilo is able to escape from Russia and return to Hungary, where he is reunited with Viktoria. The two are finally able to marry and live happily ever after. The music of Viktoria und ihr Husar is characterized by its catchy melodies and lively rhythms. The operetta features several popular songs, including "Reich mir zum Abschied noch einmal die Hände", "Komm, Zigány", and "Mausi, süß warst du heute Nacht". Viktoria und ihr Husar was a huge success when it premiered in Vienna in 1930. It quickly became one of the most popular operettas of the time and was performed in theaters throughout Europe. The operetta was also adapted into a film in 1931, which further increased its popularity. Despite its initial success, Viktoria und ihr Husar fell out of favor in the years following World War II. However, it has since been revived and continues to be performed in theaters around the world. Its catchy tunes and romantic storyline have made it a beloved classic of the operetta genre.
