Born on January 12, 1914, in Vienna, Austria, Else showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Else received her formal music education at the Vienna Academy of Music, where she studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and composer, Franz Schmidt. She graduated with honors in 1933 and began her career as a concert pianist. Else's talent and dedication to music quickly earned her recognition in the music world. She made her debut performance at the Vienna Musikverein in 1935, where she received critical acclaim for her performance of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2, also known as the "Moonlight Sonata." Over the next few years, Else continued to perform in various concerts and recitals throughout Europe, earning a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of her generation. In 1938, she was invited to perform at the Salzburg Festival, where she played Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, K. 488, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Her performance was a huge success, and she received a standing ovation from the audience. However, Else's career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. As a Jewish musician, she was forced to flee Austria and seek refuge in the United States. She arrived in New York City in 1940 and continued to perform in various concerts and recitals throughout the country. In 1943, Else was invited to perform at the Carnegie Hall in New York City, where she played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73, also known as the "Emperor Concerto." Her performance was a huge success, and she received a standing ovation from the audience. Over the next few years, Else continued to perform in various concerts and recitals throughout the United States, earning a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of her generation. In 1947, she was invited to perform at the White House for President Harry S. Truman and his wife, Bess Truman. She played a selection of classical pieces, including works by Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin. In 1950, Else was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize, which recognizes outstanding achievement in classical music. She was the first woman to receive the award, and it cemented her reputation as one of the greatest pianists of her time. Else continued to perform and record music throughout the 1950s and 1960s, earning critical acclaim for her performances of works by Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, and other classical composers. In 1968, she retired from performing and devoted her time to teaching music to young students. Else Liebesberg passed away on December 23, 1999, at the age of 85. She left behind a legacy of exceptional talent and dedication to music, inspiring generations of musicians to follow in her footsteps.
