Composer:Sergey RachmaninovGenre:SymphonyStyle:SymphonyCompose Date:1891Average_duration:12:43Sergey Rachmaninov's Symphony in D minor Youth Symphony, TN ii/43, was composed in 1891 when he was just 18 years old. The symphony premiered on March 21, 1892, in Moscow, conducted by the composer himself. The symphony consists of four movements: 1. Allegro ma non troppo 2. Allegro vivace 3. Larghetto 4. Allegro con fuoco The first movement opens with a dark and brooding theme in the strings, which is then taken up by the woodwinds. The music builds to a powerful climax before subsiding into a more lyrical section. The second movement is a lively scherzo, with a playful theme in the strings and a more subdued trio section. The third movement is a beautiful and melancholy adagio, featuring a haunting melody in the oboe. The final movement is a fiery and energetic allegro, with a triumphant theme in the brass and a thrilling coda. Despite its youthfulness, the Symphony in D minor displays many of the characteristics that would become hallmarks of Rachmaninov's later works. The symphony is full of lush harmonies, soaring melodies, and virtuosic piano writing (Rachmaninov was a renowned pianist as well as a composer). The symphony also shows the influence of Tchaikovsky, whom Rachmaninov greatly admired. While the Symphony in D minor is not as well-known as Rachmaninov's later works, it is a fascinating glimpse into the early development of one of the greatest composers of the 20th century.More....
