He was a renowned cellist and conductor who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Rohan's musical journey began at a young age when he started playing the cello. He showed exceptional talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. Rohan's parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He received his early training from his father, who was a cellist himself. Rohan's father recognized his son's talent and encouraged him to study under the renowned cellist, Emanuel Feuermann. Rohan was only 14 years old when he started studying under Feuermann, who was impressed by his talent and dedication. Rohan's training under Feuermann was cut short due to the outbreak of World War II. Rohan's family was Jewish, and they were forced to flee Czechoslovakia to escape persecution by the Nazis. They settled in the United States, where Rohan continued his musical education. He studied under the renowned cellist, Gregor Piatigorsky, at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Rohan's talent as a cellist was soon recognized, and he started performing in concerts across the United States. He made his debut as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1946, playing the Dvorak Cello Concerto. Rohan's performance was well-received, and he was praised for his technical skill and musicality. Rohan's career as a cellist continued to flourish, and he became a sought-after performer. He played with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Rohan was also a member of the Budapest String Quartet, one of the most renowned string quartets of the time. In addition to his career as a cellist, Rohan was also a conductor. He studied conducting under the renowned conductor, George Szell, and made his debut as a conductor in 1956, leading the Cleveland Orchestra. Rohan's conducting career was also successful, and he conducted some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1975, and he was made an honorary citizen of his hometown, Prague, in 1995.
