George Cehanovsky was a renowned American baritone and opera singer, born on February 6, 1892, in New York City. He was the son of Romanian immigrants, and his father was a tailor. Cehanovsky grew up in a musical family, and his parents encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Cehanovsky began his musical training at the age of 14, studying voice with William Thorner. He later studied at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School) in New York City, where he was a student of Frank La Forge and Oscar Saenger. He also studied with the famous Italian baritone, Antonio Scotti. Cehanovsky made his operatic debut in 1918, singing the role of Marcello in Puccini's La BohĆØme with the Chicago Opera Company. He quickly established himself as a leading baritone, performing with many of the world's most prestigious opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and the Chicago Lyric Opera. One of Cehanovsky's most famous roles was that of Rigoletto in Verdi's opera of the same name. He performed this role over 400 times throughout his career, including at the Metropolitan Opera, where he made his debut in 1924. He also performed the role of Scarpia in Puccini's Tosca, another of his signature roles. Cehanovsky was known for his powerful voice, his dramatic stage presence, and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. He was also a skilled actor, and his performances were often praised for their intensity and authenticity. In addition to his work in opera, Cehanovsky was also a successful concert singer. He performed in recitals and concerts throughout the United States and Europe, and he was particularly known for his interpretations of the songs of Schubert and Schumann. Cehanovsky received many honors and awards throughout his career. In 1941, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the National Institute of Arts and Letters for his contributions to American music. He was also awarded the Order of the Star of Romania, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Romanian citizen. Cehanovsky retired from the stage in 1951, but he continued to teach voice at the Juilliard School until his death in 1954. He was remembered as one of the greatest baritones of his time, and his recordings continue to be admired by music lovers around the world.
