The orchestra was founded in 1933 as the Radio Luxembourg Symphony Orchestra, and has since become one of the most respected orchestras in Europe. The orchestra's early years were marked by a series of notable conductors, including Louis de Froment, who served as music director from 1958 to 1963. Under Froment's leadership, the orchestra gained a reputation for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. In 1963, the orchestra was renamed the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, and continued to build on its reputation for excellence. In 1996, the orchestra underwent a major transformation when it was merged with the Radio Luxembourg Symphony Orchestra to form the Luxembourg Radio Symphony Orchestra. The new ensemble was led by conductor David Shallon, who served as music director from 1996 until his untimely death in 2000. During Shallon's tenure, the orchestra continued to expand its repertoire and collaborate with some of the world's most renowned soloists and conductors. In 2002, the orchestra appointed Emmanuel Krivine as its new music director. Krivine, a French conductor with a distinguished career in both classical and contemporary music, brought a new energy and vision to the orchestra. Under his leadership, the orchestra has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, performing works by contemporary composers alongside the classics of the repertoire. One of the highlights of the orchestra's recent history was its performance at the 2015 BBC Proms in London. The orchestra, under Krivine's baton, performed a program of works by Ravel, Debussy, and Stravinsky to critical acclaim. The performance was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and was hailed as a triumph for the orchestra. The Luxembourg Radio Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its recordings, winning numerous awards for its albums of works by composers such as Mahler, Ravel, and Debussy. In 2017, the orchestra won the International Classical Music Award for its recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 6, conducted by Krivine. In addition to its performances and recordings, the orchestra is also committed to education and outreach. It has a strong partnership with the Luxembourg Conservatory, and regularly offers masterclasses and workshops for young musicians. The orchestra also hosts a series of family concerts and educational programs, aimed at introducing young audiences to the joys of classical music. Overall, the Luxembourg Radio Symphony Orchestra is a testament to the power of music to bring people together and inspire greatness. With its commitment to innovation, excellence, and education, the orchestra has become a beloved institution in Luxembourg and beyond, and continues to inspire audiences around the world.More....
