United KingdomBirth:November 2, 1880Death:April 24, 1939Period:ModernGenre:ChamberKeyboardJohn Foulds was a British composer who lived from 1880 to 1939. He was born in Manchester, England, to a family of musicians. His father was a bass player in the Hallé Orchestra, and his mother was a singer. Foulds showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. He later studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Foulds began his career as a viola player in various orchestras, including the Hallé Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra. However, he soon turned his attention to composition and began writing music in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, and songs. One of Foulds' early successes was his suite for orchestra, "April-England," which was premiered in 1916. The piece was well-received and helped establish Foulds as a composer to watch. He continued to write orchestral works throughout his career, including his "Dynamic Triptych" and his "Three Mantras." Foulds was also interested in Indian music and culture, and he spent several years living in India in the 1930s. During this time, he wrote a number of works that incorporated Indian musical elements, including his "Hindu Song" and his "Three Indian Pieces." Foulds' interest in Indian music was ahead of its time, and his works in this style were not widely appreciated until many years later. In addition to his orchestral works, Foulds wrote a number of chamber music pieces, including his "String Quartet No. 1" and his "Piano Trio." He also wrote a number of songs, many of which were settings of poems by his wife, Maud MacCarthy. Despite his successes as a composer, Foulds struggled to gain recognition during his lifetime. He was often overlooked by critics and audiences, and his music was not widely performed. Foulds' health also began to decline in the 1930s, and he died in 1939 at the age of 59. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in Foulds' music, and his works have been performed and recorded more frequently. His music is now recognized for its originality and its incorporation of diverse musical influences. Foulds' legacy as a composer continues to grow, and his contributions to the world of classical music are increasingly appreciated.More....
