The Miskolc Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Miskolc, Hungary. The orchestra was founded in 1961 by a group of local musicians who were passionate about classical music and wanted to bring it to the people of Miskolc and the surrounding areas. The founding members of the orchestra included István Silló, who served as the orchestra's first conductor, and János Kovács, who was the orchestra's first concertmaster. Over the years, the orchestra has had many talented musicians and conductors, including Tamás Gál, who served as the orchestra's conductor from 1987 to 1992, and Zsolt Hamar, who has been the orchestra's conductor since 2011. The Miskolc Symphony Orchestra has performed all over Hungary and has also toured internationally, performing in countries such as Austria, Germany, Italy, and the United States. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including pianist Zoltán Kocsis, violinist Barnabás Kelemen, and cellist Miklós Perényi. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. The orchestra was chosen to represent Hungary at the ceremony and performed a piece by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály. The Miskolc Symphony Orchestra has also received many awards and accolades over the years. In 2007, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious Kossuth Prize, which is the highest cultural award in Hungary. The orchestra was recognized for its contributions to Hungarian culture and for its excellence in the field of classical music. In addition to its performances, the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra is also committed to music education and outreach.
