Erling Modrup was born on May 12, 1985, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned classical pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Modrup showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Modrup's talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at the age of six. He won his first competition at the age of eight and went on to win several more throughout his childhood and teenage years. Modrup's parents recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Modrup attended the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied under some of the most renowned classical pianists in the world. He quickly established himself as a talented and dedicated student, and his professors praised his technical skill and musicality. Modrup's breakthrough performance came in 2005 when he won the prestigious International Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. Over the next few years, Modrup continued to build his reputation as one of the world's most talented classical pianists. He also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, and Simon Rattle. Modrup's repertoire was vast and included works by some of the greatest composers in history, including Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin. He was particularly known for his interpretations of Chopin's music, and his recordings of the composer's works were widely praised by critics and audiences alike. In 2010, Modrup was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise. The award came with a cash prize of $25,000, which Modrup used to fund his recordings and performances. Modrup continued to perform and record throughout the 2010s, and his reputation as one of the world's greatest classical pianists only grew. He was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he played a piece by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. In 2018, Modrup announced that he would be taking a break from performing to focus on his family and personal life. He had recently become a father and wanted to spend more time with his wife and child. However, he continued to teach and mentor young musicians, and his legacy as one of the greatest classical pianists of his generation continued to inspire future generations of musicians. Erling Modrup passed away on January 15, 2021, at the age of 35. His death was a shock to the classical music world, and tributes poured in from around the globe.
