He was born on September 14, 1928, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Schmidt showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Schmidt received his formal music education at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied composition, conducting, and piano. He graduated in 1952 and went on to study conducting with Igor Markevitch in Salzburg, Austria. He also studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, France. Schmidt began his career as a pianist, performing in concerts and recitals throughout Denmark. However, he soon turned his attention to conducting and began working with various orchestras in Denmark and abroad. In 1957, he was appointed the conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 1964. During his tenure, he transformed the orchestra into one of the leading ensembles in Denmark. In 1965, Schmidt was appointed the principal conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 1977. During his time with the orchestra, he conducted numerous concerts and made several recordings, including a highly acclaimed recording of Carl Nielsen's symphonies. He also introduced the orchestra to contemporary music, commissioning works by Danish composers such as Per Nørgård and Poul Ruders. Schmidt was also a prolific composer, writing music in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, and vocal music. His music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, colorful harmonies, and rhythmic vitality. Some of his most famous works include his Symphony No. 1, his Concerto for Orchestra, and his opera "Antigone." In addition to his work as a conductor and composer, Schmidt was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the Aarhus Conservatory, where he mentored many young musicians who went on to have successful careers in music. Throughout his career, Schmidt received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1977, he was awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize, the highest honor for a Danish composer. He was also awarded the Order of the Dannebrog, one of Denmark's highest honors, in recognition of his contributions to Danish culture. Schmidt continued to work as a conductor and composer until his death on March 28, 2010, at the age of 81. His legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and recorded by orchestras and ensembles around the world.More....
