He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a professional violinist and his mother a pianist. Snell began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the harp. Snell attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under renowned harpist Maria Korchinska. After graduating, he began his career as a freelance musician, performing with various orchestras and ensembles. In 1964, Snell joined the London Symphony Orchestra as their principal harpist, a position he held for over 30 years. During his time with the orchestra, he performed on numerous recordings and toured extensively around the world. Snell was also a prolific composer and arranger, with his works being performed by orchestras and ensembles worldwide. He composed music for films, television, and the stage, including the score for the 1981 film "Excalibur." In addition to his work with the London Symphony Orchestra, Snell was also a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. He performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Snell's talent and contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1986, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to music. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Snell retired from the London Symphony Orchestra in 1997 but continued to perform and compose music until his death on December 8, 2016, at the age of 80.
