United States of AmericaBirth:November 22, 1899 in Bloomington, INDeath:December 27, 1981 in Rancho Mirage, CAHoagy Carmichael was an American composer, pianist, and singer who was born on November 22, 1899, in Bloomington, Indiana. He was the son of Howard Clyde Carmichael, a lawyer, and Lida Mary Robison, a pianist and singer. Carmichael grew up in a musical family, and his mother taught him to play the piano at a young age. He was also exposed to a variety of musical styles, including classical, jazz, and blues. Carmichael attended Indiana University, where he studied law and played in a jazz band. However, he soon realized that his true passion was music, and he dropped out of law school to pursue a career in music. In 1925, he moved to New York City, where he worked as a pianist and songwriter. Carmichael's first big break came in 1927, when he wrote the song "Stardust." The song became a hit and has since become a jazz standard. Over the next few years, Carmichael wrote a number of other popular songs, including "Georgia on My Mind," "Lazy River," and "Rockin' Chair." In addition to his work as a songwriter, Carmichael was also a talented pianist and singer. He performed regularly in clubs and on radio shows, and he appeared in several films, including "To Have and Have Not" and "The Best Years of Our Lives." Carmichael's music was characterized by its simple, melodic style and its incorporation of elements of jazz and blues. His songs often featured lyrics that were nostalgic and romantic, and they were popular with audiences of all ages. Carmichael continued to write and perform music throughout his life, and he received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to American music. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971, and he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1974. Hoagy Carmichael died on December 27, 1981, in Rancho Mirage, California. He was 82 years old. Despite his passing, his music continues to be celebrated and performed by musicians around the world.More....
