David Raksin was an American composer of classical music, best known for his film scores. He was born on August 4, 1912, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents. His father was a violinist and conductor, and his mother was a pianist. Raksin showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Raksin's family moved to New York City when he was a child, and he continued his musical education there. He studied piano with Isidor Philipp and composition with Arnold Schoenberg, who was a major influence on his work. Raksin also studied at the Juilliard School of Music and the New School for Social Research. In the 1930s, Raksin began working as a composer and arranger for radio and theater productions.
