Michael Feinstein is a renowned American singer, pianist, and music archivist who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on September 7, 1956, in Columbus, Ohio, Michael Feinstein grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His mother was a singer, and his father was a sales executive who loved to play the piano. Michael Feinstein's love for music began at an early age, and he started playing the piano when he was just five years old. Feinstein's family moved to Los Angeles when he was six years old, and he continued to pursue his passion for music. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied music and theater. During his college years, Feinstein became interested in the music of the Great American Songbook, a collection of popular songs from the early 20th century. He began collecting sheet music and recordings of these songs, and he soon became an expert on the subject. After college, Feinstein began performing in local clubs and restaurants, where he gained a reputation as a talented pianist and singer. In 1986, he was discovered by the legendary songwriter Ira Gershwin, who invited him to become his assistant and archivist. Feinstein spent six years working with Gershwin, cataloging his music and preserving his legacy. During this time, Feinstein also began performing his own shows, which featured songs from the Great American Songbook. He quickly gained a following, and his performances were praised for their authenticity and reverence for the music. In 1988, he released his first album, "Pure Gershwin," which was a tribute to the music of George and Ira Gershwin. Feinstein's career continued to flourish throughout the 1990s and 2000s. He released numerous albums, including "Michael Feinstein Sings the Burton Lane Songbook," "Michael Feinstein with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra," and "The Sinatra Project." He also performed in numerous concerts and shows, including a tribute to Frank Sinatra at Carnegie Hall in 1993. In addition to his performing career, Feinstein has also been a passionate advocate for music education and preservation. He has served on the board of directors for the Library of Congress' National Recording Preservation Board and has worked to preserve and promote the music of the Great American Songbook. Feinstein has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1990, he was awarded the Drama Desk Special Award for his contributions to the preservation of the Great American Songbook. He has also been nominated for five Grammy Awards and has won two, for his albums "Michael Feinstein Sings the Jule Styne Songbook" and "Only One Life: The Songs of Jimmy Webb." In 2007, Feinstein was appointed the artistic director of the newly renovated Feinstein's at the Regency, a nightclub in New York City that was named after him. The club quickly became a popular destination for music lovers, and Feinstein continued to perform there regularly until it closed in 2012. Today, Michael Feinstein continues to perform and record music, and he remains a passionate advocate for music education and preservation. He has been praised for his contributions to the world of classical music and for his dedication to preserving the legacy of the Great American Songbook.
