She was the daughter of the legendary jazz singer Nat King Cole and his wife, Maria Hawkins Ellington. Natalie grew up in a musical family and was exposed to music from an early age. Her father was a major influence on her musical career, and she often accompanied him on tour. Natalie began her music career in the mid-1970s, and her first album, "Inseparable," was released in 1975. The album was a commercial success, and it earned her two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Her second album, "Natalie," was released in 1976 and featured the hit single "Sophisticated Lady (She's a Different Lady)." In 1977, Natalie released her third album, "Unpredictable," which featured the hit single "I've Got Love on My Mind." The album was a critical and commercial success, and it earned her another Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Natalie continued to release successful albums throughout the 1980s, including "Don't Look Back" (1980), "Happy Love" (1981), and "I'm Ready" (1983).
